‘Buy Nothing’ could be the light at the end of the tunnel, these are groups of people connected virtually giving away things for free thereby helping people fight inflation.
With inflation at an all-time high, almost everything feels expensive, In October
· The prices of apparel were up by 4.3% YoY
· And it also hit hard of furniture, which was up by 13.5% YoY
But what if I say there was a way to buy these expensive items without paying crazy-high prices?
Join ‘Buy Nothing’ Groups
These groups are usually organized online mostly on Facebook with a bunch of people who give away things for free, As per the Wall Street Journal
It all started with the buy nothing project which was founded back in 2013 as a way to reduce the environmental harm of plastic waste.
The community saw massive growth during the pandemic.
· More than 2Million new users joined the program over the past year, and the community is set to reach a 5Million user mark by 2022.
· The project now counts ~7k Buy Nothing communities worldwide
Beyond reducing waste, the groups give the community a way to meet and interact with neighbours and cut back on spending.
But these buy nothing groups can’t solve everything, Since it’s a growing community the odds of you finding the exact item you’re looking for is very low.
So while it may not be the best place to find the gifts on your holiday shopping list, it could be a viable option for a Yankee Swap.
We’ve heard from one member that Buy Nothing groups can be a great place to find free last-minute tickets for concerts and stand-up sets.
